9/10/2018 1 Comment Writing Process RoundtableAs I walked in the bookstore to return the books I borrowed I ran into some familiar faces. They weren’t just normal people they were legendary book writers. The book writers were Don Murray , Ray Bradbury , Anne Lamott . I introduced myself and sat at the table to ask them some questions about the Writing Process which I knew nothing about or anything about reading.
My first question was “ How many stages are in writing process?”. Just as I thought Don answered first and said “ The writing process itself can be divided into three stages: prewriting, writing, and rewriting “. I couldn’t believe it because I never pre wrote anything before in my life. I always got straight to it. “ What is the longest stage in the writing process?“ i asked. Don answered again before the others could even open their mouth. “ Prewriting usually takes about 85 percent of the writer’s time. “. “ So Don why does it take so long?” “ Prewriting may include research and daydreaming, note-making and outlining, title-writing and lead-writing.” he said. “ I’ve heard enough from you Don thanks”. He wrote a book on the writing process so i’m guessing that’s why he answered all the questions.”Where do you guys right your best work at?” and outta now Ray came up to the table and pulled a chair up and said happily “ I can work anywhere”. I thought to myself that can’t be true. “ Really Ray how….. Just how?” Ray excitingly answered saying “ I wrote in bedrooms and living rooms when I was growing up with my parents and my brother in a small house in Los Angeles and I worked on my typewriter in the living room, with the radio and my mother and dad and brother all talking at the same time.” I’ve heard at least a word or two from everybody at the table except Anne Lamont. So before I decided to leave I wanted to ask her a few questions. “In your book Bird by Bird you talk alot about short assignments …… why?” I asked curiously. Anne said “ Short assignments is the idea of a shitty first draft.”.”I’ve never wrote a short assignment Anne”. “ All good writers write them”. I felt ashamed inside because that basically meant I wasn’t a good writer. “ Well Anne why do they that?” I questioned.” Because this is how they end up with good second drafts and third terrific drafts”. “ I’ve never really thought about any of that i’m glad I seen you guys sitting down in the bookstore or I would still be lost with half this stuff”. As I left the store they helped me come up with my own 3 quotes based on the articles they wrote. My first quote is “ The writing process take time and doesn’t always have to rushed , it steps for it”. My second quote is “ That no matter where and when you do your work if you have something on your mind and need to express it writing is a good choice or at least a go start. My final quote is that “ The more you edit and revise your writing the better it gets “.
